Reforming the Legislature in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s political journey since gaining independence in 1971 has shifted back and forth between democratic aspirations and periods of authoritarian rule. The country now stands at a crossroads again after its authoritarian leader, Sheikh Hasina, was ousted after popular protests last year. Tasked with the mandate of “rebooting democracy”, the Constitutional Reform Commission has proposed sweeping changes, including restructuring the legislature from a parliamentary to a semi-parliamentary system with moderation.

Grundlegende Reform oder Schnellschuss?

Im März 2025 haben der Deutsche Bundestag und der Bundesrat einer Änderung des Grundgesetzes zugestimmt. Das am 24. März 2025 im Bundesgesetzblatt verkündete Gesetz sieht unter anderem vor, dass für Bund und Länder in den nächsten Jahren erhebliche neue Gestaltungs- und Verschuldungsspielräume entstehen sollen. Die Änderungen, die nach dem Entwurf des Koalitionsvertrages wohl noch nicht das Ende der Reformbemühungen darstellen, weisen einige offene Fragen und sprachliche Ungenauigkeiten auf, die Bund und Länder einfachgesetzlich weiter bearbeiten müssen.

The Opposition Erdoğan Can Tolerate

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is remaking Turkey’s opposition – not by defeating it outright, but by replacing it. His latest strategy appears to sideline the secular Republican People’s Party (CHP) and elevate the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) as a more fragmented, controllable rival. This calculated manoeuvre could fracture the anti-Erdoğan bloc ahead of the 2028 elections while projecting an image of democratic pluralism.

Eben noch schnell den Kriegsdienst verweigern?

Im Koalitionsvertrag steht ein Modell für einen neuen Wehrdienst. Die jungen Menschen in Deutschland lehnen diesen aber mehrheitlich ab. Die Wehrpflicht ist dabei zwar eine Verfassungspflicht aller Bürger (nicht Bürgerinnen), gleichzeitig gibt es mit dem Grundrecht auf Kriegsdienstverweigerung eine außergewöhnlich starke Exit-Option für die Wehrpflichtigen. Diese ist auch im Verteidigungsfall sicher.

Governing in the Shadow of Indictments

Israel has been experiencing fierce conflicts between the Prime Minister and the government on the one hand and prominent public officials on the other. Two such conflicts have occupied the public discourse in recent weeks: the conflict between the government and both the Attorney General (Gali Barahav-Miara) and the head of the internal security service (Ronen Bar). In both cases, the government's attempt to remove these officials from office has run into legal difficulties, grounded in accusations concerning conflict of interest, which stem from two opposing principles within administrative law.

Bis die Bergwacht kommt

Am Freitag, den 04.04.2025, ist im Thüringer Landtag einmal mehr die „Wahl der vom Landtag zu berufenden Mitglieder des Richterwahlausschusses“ gescheitert. Ohne den Ausschuss können in Thüringen Richter und Richterinnen auf Probe nicht auf Lebenszeit ernannt werden. Und ohne Lebenszeitrichter und -richterinnen droht der Thüringer Justiz – verschärft durch die anstehende Pensionierungswelle – die Funktionsunfähigkeit. Sollte die AfD-Blockade dauerhaft anhalten, muss ein anderer Weg gefunden werden. Eine verfassungsrechtliche Gratwanderung – denn alle denkbaren Lösungen stehen quer zum Wortlaut des Art. 89 Abs. 2 der Thüringer Verfassung.

This blog post will set out who is responsible for the protection of human rights from climate change within the textile industry. In a second step, this blog post aims to analyse the EU Strategy, focusing on the intersection between environmental and social rights in the textile industry.
